How to Get Rid of Dandruff: 7 Proven Natural Home Remedies

How to get rid of dandruff is probably the most asked question when it comes to hair treatment.

Dandruff is a skin condition that causes dry gray or white flakes of dead skin to pop up in the scalp or hair. These flakes are usually noticeable if they fall from your hair onto the shoulders. The scalp may also feel itchy and dry.

This skin condition is not contagious at all and does not usually pose any threat to our health, but can be pretty embarrassing and unpleasant. It can range from mild to severe.

There are people who believe that the reason for this condition is poor hygiene, but that is not true at all. Though infrequent shampooing could make dandruff even more obvious, scientists are still studying the cause, which seems to be complex.

How to Get Rid of Dandruff with Natural Remedies

There are some home remedies that can help you decrease the appearance of this condition on your scalp and hair.

As a Your Health Tuber with dandruff problem, who tried almost everything from expensive hair products to homeopathic remedies to prevent it, I can recommend these 7 amazing natural remedies that still work perfectly for me. Hope this list will also help you find the ideal natural remedy for your dandruff condition:

  1. Coconut Oil

I put coconut oil first on my list because is my personal favorite. The reason for that is its effectiveness and incredibly good smell. This oil is also really good for dry and damaged over-processed hair. Before taking a shower, massage 4-6 tablespoons of coconut oil into your hair and scalp and leave it for about an hour. In the end, shampoo as usual. Sometimes I apply coconut oil into my scalp and hair, wrap it with a cotton towel and leave it overnight. It does not molest me when I sleep at all and the results are even better.

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar

I’ve seen this on Dr. Oz show once and decided to try it. Though I don’t like the smell of apple cider vinegar this is one of the best remedies for this skin condition. The acidity changes the pH of the scalp and makes it more difficult for yeast to grow.

Simply mix a cup of apple cider vinegar with a cup of water and apply it on your hair. I have a long hair so this amount is ideal for me. If your hair is short you can use ½ of apple cider vinegar and ½ cup of water. After that, wrap your hair in a cotton towel and leave it for about 30-60 minutes. In the end, wash your hair normally. Do this 2 times a week.

  1. Tea Tree Oil

As a nutritionist, I often visit conferences about health and healthy lifestyle. So, in one seminar an expert in chemistry was talking about the fact that this oil can significantly reduce the  problem and that many expensive anti-dandruff shampoos contain 4-6% of tea tree oil, but that is not enough to show any significant results. You can add 8-9 drops of tea tree oil to your favorite shampoo product and wash your hair as usual.

  1. Olive Oil

This was the very first natural remedy I’ve ever used for eliminating dandruff. My grandmother told me this remedy, which is a great folk remedy for this skin condition. You can massage about 8-11 drops of olive oil into your hair and scalp and cover with a towel. Leave it overnight. Wash your hair normally in the morning.

  1. Lemon

To be honest, I still haven’t used this remedy but my mother regularly does. She is really satisfied and her hair looks shiny and clean. So, here is her recipe: squeeze 2 lemons in order to make a juice and massage 2-3 tablespoons of the juice into your scalp. Leave it for 5-10 minutes and rinse with lukewarm water. Do this 3 times a week until you get rid of it. The acidity from the lemon will balance the pH of the scalp and eliminate your dandruff.

  1. Aloe Vera

I already have an article for aloe Vera as a health conditioner that will make your hair looks marvelous (you can find it here: LINK). This is my second most used natural remedy for this problem (after the coconut oil). Massage some aloe Vera gel into your scalp before washing your hair. The cooling effect of aloe Vera will calm the itch.

  1. Homeopathic Remedy: Thuja Occidentalis (White Cedar)

This is a homeopathic remedy that I’ve first tried from curiosity and realize that I should continue to use it. If your hair is falling out or is dry and full with dandruff this is the solution for you. I was advised to apply a single dose of Thuja 200 on my scalp and hair and leave it for an hour before wash it with a lukewarm water.

Conclusion:

For most people, this problem can be treated with an anti-dandruff shampoo or powerful natural remedies, and not require any medical attention. However, sometimes the strong itching and flaking that seems like dandruff is actually a medicinal condition, such as psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, eczema, or fungal infections of the scalp.
