Birmingham Boutique Reels From Second Break-in: “They Took Almost Everything”

Via Manzoni, a popular high-end fashion shop in Birmingham, Michigan, is now fighting to stay open after a second break-in left its shelves nearly empty. Early on September 17, just after 4 a.m., thieves stole about $100,000 worth of designer clothes, shoes, and sunglasses before getting away. Owner Giulia Zhou said the losses were so great that the shop has not reopened, and she is now unsure if the business can survive.

A Shocking Return, Despite Upgraded Security

This break-in was especially hard for Zhou because she had already spent thousands to make the store more secure after a previous burglary about two years ago. After that first incident, she installed stronger window alarms and hired a security company to watch the boutique at all hours. She also picked the location partly because it is right across from the Birmingham Police Department, which made the second break-in feel even more unreal.
“Even with those steps in place, the thieves still got in and emptied the boutique,” Zhou said. “It’s shocking that this happened again, so close to a police station, after we did everything we could to protect the store.”
Security cameras caught the burglary, and afterwards the police visited Zhou’s house to inform her of what had taken place. The footage shows the suspects moving quickly through the dark shop, packing up the goods before they left in the early morning.

Police: Boutique Targeted for High-Value Merchandise

The Birmingham police state that this was the second break-in at Via Manzoni, the previous one having taken place in June 2024. They believe the shop was chosen since it sells valuable designer products. The detectives think that the people involved in both incidents come from the same area outside of Michigan, although no arrests have been made. At the moment, the police say there is no evidence that any other businesses in the neighbourhood are being targeted in the same manner.
Still, the frequent break-ins have damaged the confidence of local business owners. “It’s disappointing and confusing,” Mirriah Jackson, who operates a shop nearby, said. “How can a well-known local business be selected once more? It makes you doubt just how vulnerable we all are.”
Another neighbor, Jeff Merriam, said there should be a stronger police presence in the area. “Businesses should not have to wonder whether the area is being watched closely enough,” he said. “If break-ins like this continue, something has to change.”

Insurance May Help, but Timing Is a Major Hurdle

According to Zhou, the insurance should cover the cost of the broken window and most of the stolen goods, but the financial and business effects are still severe. Since many of the stolen items were seasonal and in fashion, the replacements could arrive after the trends have gone out of style. This presents a major issue for a boutique which depends on up-to-date fashion.
Zhou explained that Via Manzoni is not a large corporate chain; it’s more in the nature of a family business, which means that any losses have to be taken in by the owners themselves. The delay in restocking is almost as damaging as the theft itself.

“There’s Nothing Left to Sell”: Store Remains Closed

At the moment, Via Manzoni has to remain closed since there is almost nothing left to sell in the store. Although customers can still purchase the remaining items online, the physical shop is closed while Zhou considers her next move. She has been making herself question whether it is possible to reopen the store, particularly in view of the timing of the seasonal stock and the emotional strain of being attacked twice.
She said that she had gone from Italy to the United States in order to establish her career in this country. Since she would like to be a part of the community, the matter has a very personal significance for her. It is sad and difficult to picture having to start all over again.

Community Rallies, but Uncertainty Lingers

It is commonly stated that Via Manzoni is significant to Birmingham’s small-business community since it provides the area with a certain style, energy, and a greater number of visitors. The fact that there have been repeated break-ins shows how susceptible independent shops can feel, particularly when valuable items are stolen.
Zhou is asking anybody who has any information regarding the burglaries to get in touch with the Birmingham Police Department. “It is most heartbreaking,” she stated. “We have done everything correctly and yet we have still been the victims. I only hope that someone knows something which may be of help.”
It is not yet clear what the future holds for the boutique since the investigation is still ongoing. For Zhou, having the business reopen is not merely a matter of money; she also needs to rebuild trust, restock in time, and have to feel safe before she can welcome customers again.
Anyone who has some information should get in touch with the Birmingham Police Department.
