‘Don’t Try to Fight People Due to Road Rage’: Texas Police Held Ex-Cowboys Star Dez Bryant at Gunpoint in Front of His Daughters

A Sunday afternoon traffic dispute in Southlake, Texas ended with a former Dallas Cowboys receiver face down in a retail parking lot, officers standing over him with their weapons drawn, and his two daughters watching from the car.As reported by Yahoo Sports, Southlake police were called to the 2200 block of FM 1709 just before 1 p.m. on Oct. 25. Callers described a fight involving several people and said a weapon might be present. Officers arrived with their firearms drawn as a precaution. Several men were temporarily detained. No firearms were recovered.

Desmond Bryant, 37, was issued a cit

ation for Assault by Contact, a Class C misdemeanor, and released at the scene. Police say the dispute began as a traffic incident near Kimball Avenue.

Bryant says he was driving with his daughters when two vehicles sped past and cut him off, and that he motioned for the drivers to slow down. “He gets out of the car, he’s talking crazy,” Bryant said. He acknowledged swearing, and said he told the man: “Hey, man, you pull that gun, I’m telling you right now, you better use it.” He says he never actually saw a gun. “I was really more so concerned about my children,” he said.

Was the Gunpoint Stop the Problem, or the Argument That Started It?

A thread about the stop on r/TheNFLVibes drew more than 200 comments in its first day, and the argument split almost immediately.

Most of the upvotes went to people who thought the response was out of proportion. “Police pulled up guns drawn just bc caller said there COULD be a weapon, not that they saw one,” wrote NittanyScout, in the thread’s most-upvoted comment. “And we wonder how people get shot by police so often.” RoyRoger20 put it shorter: “Taser, pistol? Nah rifle.”

“Knocking a phone out of someone’s hand doesn’t require officers pointing their guns at you,” wrote 6strangerdanger9.

Others put it back on Bryant. “Don’t try to fight people due to road rage and you won’t have to deal with police,” wrote Nckbeard, in a comment another user predicted would not go over well. jamesc5z pointed to the part that matched the police account: “Literally had all three people, including a white guy and a Hispanic guy on the ground, at gunpoint, and handcuffed.”

“I mean it’s Texas there’s a good chance somebody had one,” wrote Dear-Pickle-2200.

Bryant says the investigation was one-sided. “I would rather you guys take us all down to the police station and do the proper investigation,” he said, and he plans to contest the citation. A Class C misdemeanor in Texas carries no jail time and a fine of up to $500.
