Long Branch, NJ — Butcher’s Block Owner Slammed for Vulgar Yelp Replies to Customers

LONG BRANCH, NJ – The owner of The Butcher’s Block, a well-known steakhouse in Long Branch, is facing public criticism after a series of Yelp responses to unhappy customers surfaced online.

Screenshots shared by Jersey Coast Emergency News show replies from an account listed as the restaurant’s Business Owner, and many readers say the tone crossed a line from defending the business into personally attacking the people who left the reviews.

What the Screenshots Show

According to the post, several customers who left negative reviews received sharp and, at times, crude responses. One customer said they were asked to leave the restaurant and received a vulgar insult in return, which was blurred out before publication. Another reviewer who complained about the lighting, noise level, service, and management received a similarly harsh reply that also had to be blurred.

Not every response was blunt profanity. One customer who said they struggled to get clear answers about food allergies and dietary restrictions got a sarcastic reply referencing their shirt.

A separate reviewer who claimed a dog licked them while they were eating was called weird, with the response also bringing up the reviewer’s family. An educator who criticized slow service, a delayed wine order, high prices, and inattentive staff reportedly received a comment about their weight along with the rest of the reply.

Other responses included lines suggesting the internet would judge for itself, and accusations that certain reviewers were arrogant or entitled. Taken together, the replies moved past simply disputing what happened during a visit and instead targeted the reviewers themselves, touching on their appearance and personal lives.

A Restaurant Known for Its Bold Reputation

The Butcher’s Block has built a name for its steaks, unique atmosphere, and reputation as one of the toughest reservations to land on the Jersey Shore. Part of that reputation has come from a blunt, sometimes confrontational online presence that some customers say is part of the restaurant’s charm.

That same directness is now drawing scrutiny. Critics argue the responses go beyond a business defending itself and instead read as attacks meant to embarrass the customers who posted them.

Others have questioned whether the replies were actually written by the owner or by someone else managing the account, since the restaurant has not yet confirmed authorship. Jersey Coast Emergency News reported it reached out to The Butcher’s Block for comment and will update the story if a response is received.

Community Reaction Is Split

The public reaction to the story has been divided. A number of commenters said the criticism is overblown, arguing that people are too quick to pile on businesses for the way they respond online. One commenter said it felt unfair to blow up a business over how it chooses to reply, adding that customers who dislike the approach can simply avoid the restaurant.

Several loyal patrons defended the owner directly, describing him as personally welcoming and saying the restaurant runs smoothly because of his attention to detail. Supporters also pointed out that the high prices and difficulty getting a table are well known before anyone walks in the door, so complaints about cost or crowding shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Other commenters were less forgiving of the reviewers than of the owner, with one saying the incident involving the dog would have bothered anyone with allergies. A few even said the controversy made them more curious to try the restaurant rather than less.

At the same time, some readers said the responses, regardless of who wrote them, were simply not appropriate for a business to post publicly, no matter how frustrating a review might be. They argued that personal jabs about someone’s weight, family, or appearance cross a line that ordinary customer service complaints should never reach.

For now, The Butcher’s Block has not issued a public statement addressing the screenshots or confirming who is behind the Yelp account’s replies. Whether the controversy affects the restaurant’s business remains to be seen, especially given its long-standing popularity and loyal customer base. Jersey Coast Emergency News said it will share any response from the restaurant once it is received.
