Rhode Island State Police Investigate Fatal I-95 Rollover Near Branch Avenue

PROVIDENCE, RI — A passenger died and the driver was left in critical condition after a rollover crash on Interstate 95 in Providence over the weekend, according to Rhode Island State Police. Troopers said they found both people outside the vehicle after it rolled on the northbound side of the highway.

The crash happened Saturday night just before the Branch Avenue overpass. State police said the passenger was identified as 30-year-old Leneth Fisher, who died from injuries suffered in the wreck.

Troopers found both occupants ejected from the vehicle

Rhode Island State Police said troopers were called to I-95 north and arrived to find evidence of a rollover that had thrown both occupants from the vehicle. The crash scene was located just before the Branch Avenue overpass, a busy stretch of highway in the city.

Officials did not say how many vehicles were involved beyond the rollover vehicle or whether anyone else was hurt. The driver has not been publicly identified and remained in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital, state police said.

Leneth Fisher was identified as the passenger who died

Authorities identified the passenger as Leneth Fisher, 30, and said Fisher died from injuries sustained in the crash. No additional details about Fisher were released by state police.

The fatality turns the weekend wreck into one of the most serious highway crashes in the area this month. The condition of the driver underscores how severe the rollover was, especially because both people were ejected from the vehicle.

The cause of the crash has not been determined

State police said it is still unclear what caused the vehicle to roll over. Investigators have not announced whether speed, road conditions, impairment, or another factor played a role.

That means the case remains open as troopers work to piece together the sequence of events leading up to the crash. For now, officials are only confirming the location, the injuries, and the fact that the vehicle rolled on I-95 north.

Rhode Island Hospital is treating the driver in critical condition

The driver was taken to Rhode Island Hospital and remained there in critical condition, according to state police. Officials did not release any update on the person’s age, identity, or medical prognosis.

Because the driver has not been identified, police have also not said whether the person and Fisher were related or known to each other. The lack of detail leaves the focus on the immediate aftermath: one death and one life-threatening injury from a single highway rollover.

Investigation remains active as police review the weekend wreck

Rhode Island State Police said the investigation is ongoing. That means troopers are still gathering information from the scene, the vehicle, and any witnesses who may help explain how the crash happened.

For drivers using I-95 through Providence, the wreck is another reminder of how fast a rollover can turn deadly. Police have not announced any charges or enforcement action connected to the crash.
