Tampa, FL: Tampa Customer Questions $3 To-Go Fee. The Manager’s Response Goes Viral

A customer at a Tampa restaurant had a pretty simple question about his bill. He noticed a $3 packaging fee on his takeout order and wanted to know why nobody had mentioned it when he placed the order.

The answer he got turned into a much bigger confrontation.

The customer was picking up a to-go order at J. Alexander’s on North Dale Mabry Highway when he noticed the separate charge on his receipt. He pulled out his phone and started recording as he asked an employee about it.

The employee told him he was an assistant general manager.

The conversation didn’t last long before the tone changed. The manager told the customer he was trespassing and needed to leave.

The customer continued filming and asked who the general manager was. The manager said there wasn’t one on-site — he was the person in charge. He also declined to give the customer a business card before the customer left.

The video was posted on TikTok by @mamonzita and has since passed 1.8 million views. Thousands of people have weighed in, with much of the discussion focusing on two things: the $3 charge and the way the manager handled the question.

One commenter summed up the reaction this way:

“Trespassing for asking a billing question? That’s just crazy.”

Another viewer wasn’t happy about the separate charge for the container itself, writing that charging for a to-go box was “crazy.”

But there were people who saw the situation differently.

One commenter who said they work in the restaurant industry pointed out that employees don’t necessarily decide which fees appear on a bill. A worker may simply be left to explain or defend a policy created somewhere above them.

There’s also an important piece of information the video doesn’t settle.

The clip doesn’t show whether the packaging fee was disclosed before the customer placed his order. It shows the receipt and the conversation about the charge, but not necessarily everything that happened before the recording began.

And while separate takeout charges can annoy customers, restaurants do have additional expenses when preparing food to go. Containers, bags and other packaging aren’t free, which is why some restaurants charge separately while others build those costs into their menu prices.

In this case, the packaging charge became almost secondary once the conversation turned into an argument about whether the customer should leave.

That’s what appears to have driven much of the reaction online. People weren’t just debating a $3 fee. They were debating whether a question about a bill should have turned into a confrontation at all.

BroBible reported that it reached out to J. Alexander’s and the TikTok creator for comment. Neither had publicly responded as of its report.

For now, the video has left viewers with a question that has little to do with the price of a takeout container: Was this really worth telling a customer to leave over?
